The Rights and License Holders

Target Games was a Swedish company that developed and published the tabletop of Chronopia in 1997. As such, it held all rights to its own developments at that time.

With the end of Target Games in 1999, there is now a confusing development among the rights and license holders, which should be traced here at this point.

Rights holders: Target Games (1980 until 1999)

Founded in 1980 as "Äventyrsspel" and later renamed Target Games, the Swedish company became best known for its role-playing games. In particular, the fantasy game "Drakar och Demoner" had an enormous regional success. Its fifth edition, published in 1994, was set in the city of "Chronopia".

With the science fiction role-playing game "Mutant Chronicles", which was followed shortly afterwards by the matching tabletop game "Warzone", the international market could also be successfully reached. For production and development, the offshoot Target Games UK was founded in England. In 1997, the first edition of Chronopia was published.

The enormous costs involved in the development and distribution of the computer games "Svea Rike" and "Svea Rike II" led to bankruptcy proceedings in 1999, in which the computer games division of Target Games was sold and the new company "Paradox Entertainment AB" was founded for the role-playing and miniature division.

Rights holders: Paradox Entertainment (1999 until 2014)

At the beginning of 2000, an external group of investors under former managers Fredrik Malmberg and Nils Guliksson joined Paradox Entertainment as main shareholders and gradually merged the former departments of Target Games again.

Paradox Enterprise subsequently concentrated primarily on the development of computer games. In addition, there is the subsidiary "White Wolf", which takes care of role-playing games (larp and pen & paper).

The tabletop division was not reactivated. A large amount of the material available in 1999/2000 went to the well-known tin figure company "Prince August". It is not known whether this took place in the course of the bankruptcy proceedings or later.

Early on, there was a trend that Paradox Entertainment was less interested in the development of new game products and more in the purchase and marketing of trademark rights. In addition to Warzone, these include Chronopia, Mutant Chronicles and various others, especially Conan with a focus on filmmaking.

For this purpose, the company Paradox Entertainment Inc. was founded in California (USA) in 2004, which took over all major rights and licenses from Paradox Entertainment.

In the process, Paradox Interactive became separate from Paradox Entertainment and became an independent company, which became known in particular for the computer strategy games Crusader Kings, Europa Universalis, Hearts of Iron and Stellaris.

Paradox Interactive is still very active in the computer game sector today.

Licensee: Excelsior Entertainment (2001 until 2005)

On January 22, 2001, a press release announced the signing of a licensing deal between Paradox Entertainment and Excelsior Entertainment for Mutant Chronicles: Warzone and Chronopia.

At that time, Excelsior Entertainment was an importer and distributor of various gaming systems, which was founded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At the time of its third year of operation, it has taken on an increasingly active role in manufacturing as a result of its customer policy and has gradually expanded it.

Under CEO Thom Talamani, ambitious goals were targeted, which were unfortunately torpedoed by the destruction of the molds and other production equipment in formerly Target Games UK.
Thus, a functioning ACTUAL state had to be laboriously achieved. Only then could the development of the second edition of Chronopia and the new edition of Warzone be tackled.

Until the end of 2005, little was released for Chronopia apart from the rulebook of the second edition and some new units.

Various aspects made for a problematic year in 2005 and despite plans starting up again, Excelsior Entertainment lost its license at the turn of the year.

Rights holders: Cabinet Licensing (2014 until 2018)

The already well-known former manager Fredrik Malmberg founded the company "Cabinet Entertainment" in the USA in 2014, with which he took over Paradox Entertainment Inc. shortly afterwards.

In the course of this, the company was reorganized into "The Cabinet group", with its subsidiaries "Cabinet Entertainment" (financing of film/television) and "Cabinet Licensing" (exploitation of rights).

Cabinet Licensing thus held the rights to Chronopia and Warzone. Other well-known brands are: Conan the Barbarian, Kull of Atlantis, Solomon Kane, Mutant Chronicles, Mutant: Year Zero and Kult.

As far as is known, there was no use of the Chronopia trademark.

Rights holders: Heroic Signatures (since 2018)

Together with the well-known company FunCom, Cabinet Group LLC founded the licensing company Heroic Signatures at the end of 2017, in which around 29 rights trademarks, including Chronopia, were to be offered at the time.
The president of Heroic Signatures was Fredrik Malmberg.

In July 2020, the Chinese company "Tencent Holdings" acquired Funcom.

In September 2021, Funcom acquired the Cabinet Group and thus also became the sole owner of Heroic Signatures, which still exists.

Licensee: Uhrwerk Verlag (since 2021)

The German company "Uhrwerk Verlag" was founded in 2009 and focuses on the development, production and distribution of role-playing systems (more than 250 different works in 2023).

The owner of the company is Patric Thorsten Götz, who had previously offered and played both previous Chronopia editions in his game store.

A new edition and new figures were financed with a Kickstarter in spring 2022, which is scheduled to be delivered at the end of 2025.

A major driver / development for Chronopia is the Pole Marcin Malinowski, who lives in England and was already active in the scene with ideas for a new edition.
Marcin runs the UK branch of Uhrwerk Verlag.
